The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas is an Austin-based nonprofit committed to improving the quality and increasing the availability of literacy services for Austin-Area residents. They play a central role in coordinating and supporting high-quality literacy services throughout Austin and the surrounding areas (including Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson counties). They are dedicated to supporting and expanding literacy services so that businesses can hire, people can work, and families can thrive.
The Literacy Coalition unites literacy programs with each other and with the broader network of community services to provide a unified voice for literacy across Central Texas. They support a network of nearly 40 community-based agencies that offer Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL), GED preparation, children’s and family literacy, computer literacy, health literacy, workforce literacy and more. They provide these programs free of charge or for an exceptionally low cost to the community members that need them most, such as adults who struggled to attain their education through the K-12 system, children living in poverty-ridden neighborhoods, and new Austinites who have arrived to our community from various economic conditions and international locations.
The average cost to prepare a learner for the GED exam is about $500. This Nonprofit Community Partnership offers a tremendous opportunity for the in.gredients community to impact our community’s literacy levels, employment accessibility, and local families’ abilities to thrive. With your help, we can continue to grow our network of literacy services and providers to aid more of Central Texas.
