Brewing Mushrooms

We’ve heard of brewing beer sustainably, but getting mushrooms as an output’s pretty out there! 5 Kingdoms Development envisions a zero-waste and zero-emission brewing process by using the generated waste as inputs for processes like mushroom production. With this innovative idea (via 3P), mushrooms and algae may become a part of sustainable beer brewing. Cool!

  1. There’s a handful of places doing this. Many breweries are good about doing something with their spent grain. Brewpubs make bread tho the amount of grain used is negligible. Nutritionally spent grain is great food – high in fiber and protein and low in sugar. I particularly like this approach because you get beer, mushrooms, and mushroom compost/animal feed (the mushroom fodder is more digestible than raw spent grain) out of the process. There are a number of industries that can take advantage of this thinking. Realizing that our waste has value and finding a way to realize it magically turns it from trash into a valuable commodity. That is the way to keep things out of landfills.

  2. What kind of mushroom is in the photo? I think I have this mushroom growing in my back yard!

    • I’m no mushroom expert, but I believe that it’s a shaggy mane mushroom!
