Eating a Ton (Literally Speaking) in 2011
Who ate a literal ton (2,000 lbs) of food in 2011? Surprise: the average American did! Or, well, the actual figure from the NPR food blog, “The Salt” is 1,996 lbs per person which is 4 lbs shy of the one ton mark. The blog analyzes data that was collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on food consumption patterns. Of the nearly 2,000 lbs of food American’s ate last year, on average about 630 lbs could be accounted for in dairy products. That’s approximately one third!
What’s more, if the sheer weight of the food consumed isn’t suspicious, then the calorie content may be. The data shows that Americans consumed an average of 2,700 calories per day, which is 700 calories more than the suggested healthy average of 2,000.
