Wine of the Week: Haak Vineyards 2012 Malbec

This Texas Malbec from Haak Winery is complex, well rounded, and full of dark, brooding character. Extended maceration coaxed the beautiful rich colors and flavors into the finished wine, and a flawlessly managed barrel contact gave the complexity that oak aging contributes without overpowering the natural Malbec character.  A real Texas gem for you to enjoy all week – on sale!

Wine of the Week: HAAK 2013 Dry-Blanc Du Bois

Haak Vineyards and Winery out of Santa Fe, TX uses 100% Texas grapes for this delicate, dry white.  Light and elegant with a clean and crisp finish, it has shades of white linden blossom, peach, pear, and lemongrass.  Pairs well with fish, poultry, cheese, and creamy pasta dishes.  Grab a whole bottle (on sale all week!) or enjoy a glass up front and see what you think.

Summer Recipe: The Easiest Okra Recipe Ever

This time of year in this part of the country, there’s one thing you can count on finding in abundance: okra.  Not too many other crops are so well suited to the dog days of summer.  Our okra comes to us fresh daily from Sue’s Garden, a backyard master gardener just down Walnut St. (literally 200 yards from our store!). She’s been growing vegetables there for over 20 years

and boy does she know what she’s doing.  Her okra, for example, is tender no matter the size (unlike most okra, which gets “woody” when it grows beyond a few inches in length). Here’s a super easy way to serve up this quintessentially southern vegetable

The World’s Easiest Okra Recipe

Grill, broil, or pan toast (in a heavy cast iron skillet) whole okra pods until they turn a nice golden brown.  No oil/butter or salt/pepper necessary!  Try ‘em in the toaster oven for breakfast (!) or throw a bunch on the grill as a side for family dinner.  These will pleasantly surprise the whole family (and please the family doctor!).

Summer Drink Specials

Summer Recipe: Cold Brew Coffee at Home

Cold brew coffee made at home is easy, rewarding, and more affordable than alternatives.  Plus, it’s less acidic, versatile, and lasts in your fridge for up to two weeks.  The concentrate can also be used in baking, syrups/sauces, or in milkshakes (yum!).

Here’s how

to do it…..

1. Coarsely grind 3 cups (or just over 1/2 a pound) of Fara Espresso beans.

2. Fill your CoffeeSock with the grinds and moisten them for a ‘bloom.’

3. Secure the neck of the sock with the string and insert into 64oz Mason Jar.

4. Fill the jar with cold, filtered water and let steep for 12-18 hours.

5. Remove sock (let drain at lip of jar) and voila, you’ve got a delicious cold brew concentrate.

6. Mix (about 1:3) with water, milk, or milk alternatives to your desired strength.

7. Store covered in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Here’s how to do it…..
