Thanks, Mickey!
Disney, the company that brought you Mickey Mouse and other famous animated characters, is now setting… nutritional standards?
Concerned with the role the entertainment industry’s played in childhood obesity, Disney announced in June that “all products advertised on its child-focused TV channels, radio stations, and websites must comply with a strict new set of nutritional standards” (New York Times). Those commercials for highly-processed, unhealthy foods will soon become a thing of the past – a breakthrough move by Disney, one of the largest media companies in the world.
Additionally, Disney will strive to provide healthier and more nutritional meals to children at its theme parks. With such a media giant leading the way, the hope’s that other companies will follow suit and help fight childhood obesity. Thanks, Mickey!
